There Is an Untold Story to Fertility Drugs

Getting both sides of the story is more telling than you’d think

What do fertility drugs, hippies and the anti-Vietnam movements have in common?  They all fall into the turbulent time span of the 1960s.  The first experimental fertility drugs had been in the testing and development phases in the 1940s, but it wasn’t until Clomid hit the prescription pad in the 1960s that the public was given access to synthetic fertility medications.

Like so many big events that alter history, there are two sides to every story.  To this point, the exposure of the darker side of things historically significant to the 1960s has been limited to political upheaval and war.  Yet there is a definite dark side to Clomid and other fertility drugs that have stepped forward to claim a fair share of the demand.

Why pick on a market that has brought so much hope, happiness and fulfillment of dreams to so many?  The truth is that for every dream fulfilled there is a nightmare to match it, and for every hopeful desire, there are dozens of despairing thoughts hidden away.  This is the real truth of fertility drugs.

Often, the spotlight is only shone on the list of pros these medications have to offer. This can be especially true when sitting across a desk from a white-coated doctor.  The benefits of the prescribed treatment plan are enumerated with great care, while the cons or drawbacks are all but forgotten.

Informed Consent and Fertility Drugs

Only one example of withheld information is that few people are aware that one of the most common side effects of Clomid is the formation of ovarian cysts.  This seems like it would be an especially relevant concern seeing as how ovarian cysts typically serve to decrease fertility rates in women that have them.

There are many other side effects inherent to the use of fertility medications, which can be just as serious, some that can even compromise the health of the baby that the fertility drugs are trying to create. The omission of such information is not inherently dishonest, after all these risks are printed in miniscule writing enclosed on an insert when the medication is picked up.

It is, however, discouraging to know that important information, which may serve to sway decision-making is never laid on the table.  To counteract this situation, couples must be especially proactive in asking questions.

Getting All the Answers to Fertility Treatment

One such question should always be, “What other options do I have?”  It can be scary to sit across from a medical professional and decline treatment that he or she promises will give you the baby you so desire.  Ask yourself this–if there were another effective way to get pregnant without the risks posed with fertility drugs, would I take that option?
